Despite large gains in the economic status of women over the past few decades, gender gaps in earnings continue to persist, particularly at the very top. Women with graduate degrees earn, on average, 25 percent less than their male counterparts do, says Professor Patricia Cortes PhD ’06 of Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. In 2018, just 4.8 percent of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies were women. They account for a quarter of workers at the top 10 percent of labor earnings, and for 10 percent at the top 0.1 percent. In this Career Lunch and Learn webinar from May 29, 2019, Professor Cortes discusses the relative importance of two factors in explaining this phenomenon: Gender differences in psychological attributes and preferences, such as taste for competition, negotiation behavior, and risk aversion Career/family conflicts arising from the long hours, heavy travel commitments, and inflexible schedules of most high-powered jobs Professor Cortes will look at the gender differences in these factors and the sources of these differences (nature versus nurture/societal norms) and discuss the corporate and public policies that might help to address them. The conversation will be moderated by Mary Jane Daly MCP '83 , professional development director and lecturer at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
