Music Arrangement by Winthrop and Kathleen Chamberlain “Cassidy”, like many other songs from the Grateful Dead, became a favorite for us to play together. I think we first heard it over the radio. WMMR FM in Philadelphia played the full concert from the Tower Theatre live on June 06, 1976 and I recorded it on reel-to-reel tape. The Grateful Dead Movie came out that same year and had an animated part with a pinball game in space. I always thought that was such a great metaphor for the Grateful Dead’s music. Like their music the pinball in a pinball game can go anywhere. A pinball’s random trip can also remind one of the twists and turns of life. For fun, I decided to create a working pinball game in Blender using the Rigid Body World features of the software. After I finished the pinball game it had to go into a music video and I decided on ”Cassidy.” The audio of the guitar and piano were recorded in one take with the drums from the Alesis SR-18. New drum tracks and drum fills were added later using the SR-18. The bass was then added which was played by Kathleen on the Yamaha MODX keyboard. I also added more percussion by playing the Roland HPD-15. The video was created using Blender. The pinball game was created using the Rigid Body World to simulate the random movement of the pinball. This game will run until the last frame of the animation without getting stuck. The score is recorded to a separate file using a Python script so that in the event of a crash the old score can be retrieved. Cycles was used to render the video which makes it more realistic. The audio was recorded using Cakewalk Sonar X2 which exported the 5.1 surround audio. This 5.1 audio was then added to the video using Adobe Premiere.
