The Assessment Question Leaders Aren’t Asking Multilingual Learners and the Power of Measurement As schools move deeper into benchmark testing and preparation for high-stakes assessments, leaders are making critical decisions about how student learning is measured, interpreted, and acted upon. But an essential question often goes unasked: Are we measuring what students know — or how well they speak English? In this week’s Let’s Talk Power Live, Dr. Tanji Reed Marshall is joined by multilingual learner expert Melissa Lambert to explore how leadership decisions shape learning opportunities for students developing English while mastering academic content. Melissa brings decades of experience supporting schools and districts in strengthening instruction for multilingual learners and helping leaders build systems where language diversity is recognized as an asset rather than a barrier. Together we will explore: • How traditional assessments can unintentionally measure language proficiency rather than content understanding • What responsive leadership looks like when multilingual learners are present in the classroom • How leaders can shift from simply reporting data to building data responsibility with students This conversation continues our Women’s History Month series, highlighting leaders who expand opportunity and voice in education. We will also connect this discussion to the DRIVE Data Framework, which helps leaders examine the quality of their data practices: D — Data Responsibility R — Responsive I — Instructionally Aligned V — Valuable E — Empowering Because power in education is real and instructional power is even more so. Question for Leaders How confident are you that the assessments in your school measure learning rather than language fluency?
