Have you ever picked up a book you’ve always wanted to read, only to find it was difficult to understand and hard to follow? Would you like to read more challenging books without feeling overwhelmed or lost? In this video, I share my top tips as a teacher on adult reading strategies that can help you build vocabulary, expand background knowledge (schema), and actually enjoy hard books! Time stamps below. 00:00 Reading is Hard. And incredibly worthwhile. 01:17 Start where you can, then push yourself! 02:26 Grow your vocabulary / grow your comprehension. 06:09 Vocabulary expands imagination and understanding. 06:53 Grow your schema (background knowledge). 08:00 Knowledge-building (research) 08:48 Knowledge-building (experience and wisdom) 09:10 Revisit books from your past Many adults want to read more advanced books. In the classroom, teachers use strategies from the science of reading to help students get to the next reading level. These tips can definitely help adults too. For your 2026 reading challenge, pick a few difficult books that intimidate you. Sometimes, quality is more important than quantity! Teaching kids to read involves picking the appropriate book for a reader's level and ability, fostering motivation, assessing pain points, and building knowledge and vocabulary so students can access the material. The same is true for adults! If we can't understand what we read, we can't enjoy what we read. Adults can also use these science of reading skills to improve their own reading levels and read harder books. Reading advanced, sophisticated texts pushes our vocabulary to new levels and opens worlds that have been inaccessible to us in the past. And ss we build our knowledge, experience, and vocabulary, we also expand our schema -- that internal library where we store all our knowledge, memories, experiences, and context. From that library, we derive meaning from what we read. Every book we read builds that knowledge library, helping us read and understand books we'll read in the future. If you found this helpful, consider subscribing for more videos on reading, books, and becoming a more cultured, literate human. I’d also ove to hear from you in the comments. What’s the hardest book you’ve tried to read? Are there any challenging you plan to take on during your 2026 reading challenge?
