Does "Holy Scripture" mean the same thing as "Bible Canon"? In this week's video we take a look at 2 Timothy 3:15-16 to understand what Paul meant by "Holy Scriptures." We show that the word "scripture" in Greek is "graphe," which simply means "writing," and does not carry with it the meaning of "bible canon." Paul differentiates between uninspired "scripture" or "writings" and inspired "scripture" or "writings" by using the qualifing word "Holy" before it. Not all scripture or writing is considered "Holy" by Paul, hence the need for the qualifier for those writings that he does consider "inspired." The translation of verse 16 is then in context shown to read, "All writings inspired by God are useful for teaching, etc." (ASV) rather than "All scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, etc." (NKJV). We show that Paul is not saying that every writing in your modern bible canon is inspired by God, because there was no bible canon in Paul's time. The first suggestion of the 66-book bible canon most protestants use today was not until 1559. We show that there is no official SDA bible canon, and that Ellen White, James White, Joseph Bates, and other pioneers referred to writings outside our 66-book bible canon used today by many Protestants. We show that the pioneers saw that some of the books contained in the Apocrypha were very beneficial to those that "keep God's Law and commandments." (Joseph Bates). Ellen said that the "wise of these last days should understand" the Apocrypha. The pioneers hadn’t made it a point of special study, but they were evidently open to the possibility that some of these books were even Inspired.
