Did God Ordain the Idea of a Bible Canon? Sabbath School Q2 2020: How To Interpret Scripture - Week 1 Actually, the concept of a canon of scripture is not found in any text of any bible canon. You will not find a list of accepted or required reading spoken of through the power of the Holy Spirit on any of the prophet's lips, or in any of their writings. No where does God say, these are the 66 books you will read, no more, no less. The whole idea of having a closed canon stops the progression of light and truth. Again, consider that the Sadducees did not progress past the first 5 books called the Torah, and most Pharisaic Jews did not progress past Malachi. Many Christians will not consider anything outside of the New Testament. Man wants to put God in a box, and Satan wants to limit, control and even misrepresent the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. James and Ellen White taught that there were more messages coming after the three angels' messages. What are they? If you think that prophecy has ceased, then you lose out on future messages from the Spirit of Prophecy, just like the Saduducees did, just like the Jews did, just like the Protestants that did not progress with the Three Angels' messages. Jesus did not think prophecy was going to end with Him, and this is why He did not promote or even consider a canon, because that would quench the work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come." [John 16:12-13] So, you can see that Jesus was not constricting the Holy Spirit to a biblical canon. He was doing the exact opposite. He was informing the apostles that MUCH more light was to come, because they were not yet ready for what He had to tell them. Ellen and James said the exact same thing, that more light was to come, and at the proper time, the Spirit would give it to us through the prophet living at that particular time.
