Can Religion be Rescued in the 21st Century? Fromm's Religious Humanism and Authoritarian Populism

In this video, Dr. Dustin J. Byrd discusses the problem of religion being recruited into authoritarian populism, not for the means of individual and/or national liberation, but rather to be used as a marker differentiating between those who belong and those who do not. Dr. Byrd pleads for the political Left to take religious believers seriously even if they cannot believe, lest the "catalogue" of humanities religious semantics and semiotics be left in the hands of a "bad caretaker," i.e., the authoritarian Right. This discussion was part of a seminar entitled "Erich Fromm, Religion, and Judaism," which was sponsored by the Erich Fromm Society of North America. It took place on January 21st, 2024.
