Emotions exercise can be found here: https://www.drdfox.com/worksheets Emotional neglect is a form of abuse, often experienced by individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or BPD traits during childhood and sometimes continuing into adulthood. This video explores how neglect contributes to the development of BPD and ways to mitigate its impact. Neglect is typically defined as the failure to meet basic physical needs, but it also encompasses emotional distance and a lack of responsiveness to a child’s emotional needs. Research shows that early neglect can impair emotional self-regulation, increasing vulnerability to BPD traits, especially when combined with depression or stressful circumstances. As adults, neglect can manifest as confusion about emotions, self-worth, self-image, and difficulty understanding others’ emotions. These challenges often lead to unstable self-identity and struggles in social relationships and friendships. However, these deficits are not permanent; building emotional intelligence is key. By learning to respond instead of react to conflict, developing self-awareness and intuition, and taking critiques constructively, individuals can begin to overcome the negative effects of neglect and foster healthier emotional functioning.
