#passivedesign #homedesign #architecture Passive House on a 60% Mountain Slope | The TreeHaus Located in Summit Park near Park City, The TreeHaus is a highly responsive design-build project set at 7,000 feet above sea level within an extreme snowy microclimate. Conceived for a steep, densely wooded site with an approximate 60% slope, the house embeds itself into the hillside through a series of stacked cubic geometries. These volumes step with the terrain, coupling retaining walls as thermal and structural boundaries. The compact footprint minimizes site disturbance while the program is vertically organized across four levels — each rotated slightly to create decks, frame mountain views, and articulate spatial identity, reminiscent of a Rubik’s Cube strategy. Environmentally, the home is designed according to Passivhaus-inspired principles. A super-insulated 12-inch wall assembly and triple-pane glazing establish a high-performance thermal envelope capable of withstanding harsh alpine winters. The energy strategy significantly reduces heating demand, enhancing long-term efficiency and occupant comfort. Socially, the spatial hierarchy is vertically layered. Primary public living areas are sandwiched between private levels, utilizing the stepped massing to generate terraces and patios that foster an open indoor–outdoor experience despite the challenging topography. The TreeHaus stands as a deliberate and rational approach to modern mountain architecture — balancing structural pragmatism, environmental performance, and sculptural form within one of Utah’s most demanding residential landscapes.
