Welcome back to the Sustainable Clinical Medicine podcast! Psychologist and psychometrician Brian Sexton, Chief Wellness Officer at Duke Health Integrated Practice, explains how measuring healthcare worker burnout—especially emotional exhaustion—can predict clinical, operational, and personal outcomes and determine whether teams are ready for quality-improvement initiatives. Drawing on early ICU infection-reduction work, he describes shifting from pushing change onto depleted staff to screening wellbeing first and personalizing support using profiles that include exhaustion and recovery. Sexton outlines ultra-brief, evidence-based “micro-interventions” (gratitude, humor, awe, self-compassion) designed to fit into 1–2 minutes on a phone or be embedded into CME/CE to reduce burden, noting RCT evidence with improvements lasting months and even up to 12 months. He shares a seven-minute gratitude letter exercise, discusses engagement via private feedback and benchmarking, and highlights contagion effects and wellbeing-informed leadership strategies.
