Puteoli – Emeritus Professor David L. Kennedy This lecture was presented to the Perth Roman Archaeology Group on 29th Februray, 2020. It is the first of two lectures presented - please see the second lecture, 'Alba and Augusta Praetoria', a video of which has also been uploaded to this channel. "From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome (Acts 28 : 13-14, NIV)." As Ostia – the port of Rome on the Tiber, was inadequate before the major harbour works of Claudius and Trajan, Puteoli on the Bay of Naples was developed as a major landfall for not just travellers but the great corn fleet to supply the capital. The remains reflect the consequent prosperity.
