Among the works Wael Shawky presents in the Egyptian pavilion for this year’s Venice Biennale is his forty-five-minute film Drama 1882, which appears on the cover of Artforum ’s September 2024 issue. The piece restages the Urabi Revolution (1882–97) that eventually led to Britain’s occupation of Egypt. For this installment of “ Under the Cover,” Shawky talks to Editor in Chief Tina Rivers Ryan about his use of classical Arabic and the meaning of this project for local talent in Alexandria.
