(13 Feb 2026) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Arlington, Virginia -- 13 February 2026 ++PARTIALLY COVERED++ 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Rugaber, The Associated Press: "We've just gotten some good news about inflation, which cooled last month, and one measure of inflation fell to its lowest level in five years. And that's good news for consumers because we've seen so many things spike in prices since the pandemic, particularly groceries, rents, and utilities. But in January, overall inflation fell to 2.4,% which is the lowest in about eight months. And if you exclude the volatile, volatile food and gas prices, which gives you core inflation, that fell to the lowest level since March since March 2021." SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Rugaber, The Associated Press: "This latest report suggests that inflation is slowly but steadily cooling and that President Donald Trump's tariffs haven't pushed up prices as much as many people worried. Though at the same time, the White House has scrapped, delayed, or narrowed many of its tariffs, so that's one reason prices haven't risen more. In January, some imported goods like furniture, appliances and clothes did get more expensive, but those increases were offset by other things that Americans spend even more money on, like rent and used cars and gas. Used cars fell 1.8,%, the biggest drop in one month in two years. Rents have come down sharply since the pandemic as more apartment buildings have been constructed, giving people more options. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Rugaber, The Associated Press: "It could take time for Americans to really feel that inflation is cooling. Because most people can remember how much cheaper things were a few years ago, particularly everyday items like groceries, gasoline, utilities, all those things have gone up so much in the past few years that just a couple of months of slower price increases won't make that much difference. But the hope is that over time, as wages and incomes increase, people will get used to the higher prices, and it won't seem as difficult as it is now." The increase in such a broad range of costs has become a high-profile political issue under the rubric of “affordability.” Production: Carrie Antlfinger Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
