Relatives were overjoyed as they saw prisoners exiting the detention center in their prison uniform. Earlier on Saturday, around midnight, National Assembly president Jorge Rodriguez announced on his social media that the releases would take place. Relatives had been denouncing for weeks that almost no releases had happened at Zona 7, unlike other prisons and detention center were hundreds have been freed. Prisoner Morelba Delgado exited the detention center in tears. She cried when she spoke with her children on a videocall. "My boy, we'll see each other soon my love. I won't ever leave you again. God forbid this eve", she said to her son on a videocall. The releases on Saturday bring new hope for the dozens of relatives still witing outside Zona 7. "Hope grew to a thousand perecent because we know that it opened, the gates were opened and 17 came out and after them the rest will come," said Evelin Quiaro, whose son turned 30 on Saturday inside Zona 7. The remaining group fell asleep on mattresses on the street and they said they would begin a hunger strike, demanding the release of the those still inside. Venezuela’s ruling-party-controlled parliament on Thursday debated a measure that could free hundreds of opposition members, activists and human rights defenders who have been detained for months or years for political reasons. The debate in itself was a stark turn for Venezuela, where authorities have for decades denied the country has any political prisoners. Although lawmakers approved portions of the measure, they ultimately voted to suspend the session to resolve some sticking points, including whether people who left the country to avoid detention can be granted amnesty. The debate is expected to resume next week. =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
