The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning a 14.64 km, six-lane elevated highway on the Edappally-Aroor stretch of NH 66, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic flow. Here's a more detailed breakdown of the project: Project Overview: The proposed elevated highway will run from Edappally Junction to Aroor Junction, a heavily congested area that handles over one lakh passenger car units (PCUs) daily. Purpose: The project aims to decongest the Edappally-Aroor bypass, a critical stretch of NH 66, and ensure smoother traffic movement. Design and Construction: The elevated highway will be constructed on inverted U-shaped portal piers in selected areas, with one pillar on the footpath and the other on the divider, saving space and enhancing aesthetics. The project is being planned to fit within the existing Right of Way (ROW). The NHAI plans to build portal piers at seven busy locations across the city, with three locations (Palarivattom, Vyttila, and Kundanoor) already finalized. Integration with Kochi Metro: The project will need to be designed in coordination with Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) to ensure seamless integration with the proposed Kochi metro viaduct at Palarivattom Bypass Junction. Cost and Timeline: The project is estimated to cost ₹3,600 crore, and the NHAI plans to commence construction in the next financial year. Current Status: The DPR consultant, Highway Engineering Consultants Ltd, has submitted the Alignment Study Report to the NHAI. NHAI has directed the consultancy firm to revise the DPR after taking into account the vertical clearance for the metro viaduct that has been proposed at Palarivattom Bypass Junction. The existing Aroor-Edappally bypass, part of NH 66, handles over one lakh passenger car units (PCUs) daily . The 16-km elevated highway that the NHAI has mulled on the Edappally-Aroor bypass would take off from the southern side of the upcoming underpass in front of Oberon Mall #ikonesolutions #timeridersujith #nh66 #nh66kerala
