Mike Marker and Nathan Marker of Plum Creek Ranch are Kansas ranchers located in the southern tip of the Flint Hills. This father and son duo is first and foremost focused on their relationship with Christ and how they can be stewards of the land (find other related information at https://www.kglc.org). Nathan Marker provides information in this educational video on selecting guard dogs for a goat herd. Dogs protect the goats by making their presence known to predators in the area: marking their territory, barking, etc. Nathan stresses the importance of asking other individuals for their opinion, completing your own research, and analyzing your operations to determine what breed fits best. Every ranching operation encompasses different characteristics and will need guard dogs that match those varying attributes. For example, the Markers have a larger operation than many of those in their area, so they need guard dogs that are accustomed to or can adapt to protecting larger areas. If you have your own questions for Mike and Nathan, you can visit their website at www.pcrlivestock.com or reach out on Facebook @pcrlivestock.
