In Sierra Leone, one-third of girls drop out of school by age 12. This is a crisis, as education is the best pathway out of poverty. Girls drop out for many reasons, with a lack of income being the largest. Posseh Kamara, an orphan, fell behind in school because she spent many days working to buy food instead of going to class. She was too hungry to study, and her teacher called her “the saddest child.” With the support of our donors, thousands of young girls like Posseh in Sierra Leone are getting the support they need to stay In School. These girls receive a monthly cash stipend so they can afford food, uniforms and transportation. In School also provides wraparound support to give them the best chance at a brighter future. Thanks to In School, Posseh attended class five days a week this year — and it was the best year she ever had. Her aunt was able to save a little money to buy her a birthday cake to celebrate with her class, and Posseh, age 15, finally graduated from primary school. She was even named “Student of the Year” for all her hard work and perseverance. Thank you for helping girls like Posseh stay In School!
