This Big Pilot’s Watch (Ref. IW500401) is over a decade old, and was last serviced six years ago. Over time, the watch has developed visible scratches on the case and clasp, and several wearing parts show signs of use and require replacement. The watch has been sent to Schaffhausen for a full service. The journey begins as IWC Technician Terézia Leu carefully disassembles all external components, preparing the watch for its meticulous restoration. Once separated, the case is handed over to IWC Goldsmith Luka Gjon, who applies precision laser welding to fill notches and dents. He then works at the goldsmith machine to refine the case’s surfaces and edges, restoring its original contours and flawless aesthetic. The restoration continues with IWC Polisher Anton Nujic, who revives the case surfaces by polishing the facets to a mirror-like shine. He then applies a satin finish to the flat areas, recreating the signature contrast between brushed and polished surfaces that defines the Big Pilot’s Watch. With the case fully refurbished, IWC Technician Daniel Schuetz reassembles it with precision, ensuring every external component aligns perfectly as the watch regains its integrity. Attention then turns to the mechanical heart of the timepiece. IWC Watchmaker Florian Salzer carefully disassembles the movement, preparing each component for cleaning, inspection, and refurbishment. Worn parts are replaced, fresh lubricants applied, and the movement meticulously rebuilt. Using a timing machine, Florian fine-tunes the watch to ensure perfect accuracy. Finally, airtightness is tested to confirm the timepiece’s readiness for years of flawless performance. This process highlights the craftsmanship, precision, and dedication of IWC’s team, as they bring the Big Pilot’s Watch back to life for its next chapter on the wrist. 00:00 Watch introduction 00:45 Watch disassembling 07:55 Laser welding 09:07 Goldsmith welding 11:59 Surface finishing 18:18 Case cleaning 19:16 Case assembling 22:11 Movement disassembling 38:38 Movement cleaning 39:04 Movement assembling 1:04:14 Watch assembling
