This Ingenieur SL “Jumbo” Ref. 1832 dates to about 1976, making it nearly 50 years old. Last serviced eight years ago, it arrived with pronounced scratches and deep dents – particularly on the case – requiring extensive restoration to return it to its original geometry. The Ingenieur began in the 1950s as IWC’s first antimagnetic watch for civilian use, but it was the 1832 that transformed the model. Designed by Gérald Genta – widely regarded as the most influential watch design of all time – the “Jumbo” introduced a striking visual identity with its screw-on round bezel with five recesses, patterned dial, and integrated H-link bracelet. A technical tool watch at heart, it has since become a favorite among collectors. The watch begins its journey with IWC Technician Terézia Leu who disassembles all external components in preparation for a full refurbishment. The case then moves to IWC Goldsmith Remo Stähelin. Using precision laser welding under a microscope, he fills notches and worn areas with microscopic deposits of metal – an additive process that preserves material instead of removing it. As seen in the video, Remo uses a range of fine files to level the welded areas before refining every contour on the goldsmith machine, restoring the case and bracelet to their original, sharply defined lines. Next, IWC Polisher Anton Nujic takes over. Working component by component, he polishes every surface – each bracelet link, clasp angle, and case facet – before recreating the brushed satin finish. This model’s multi-part case requires additional steps: lapping for crisp edges, lathe-based grinding for uniform surfaces, polishing the outer case-back contour, and applying the distinctive circular graining at its center. With the exterior fully restored, Restauration Watchmaker Jeroen Van Der Jagt reassembles the case and reintegrates all external components with exact alignment. Attention shifts to the movement as Restauration Watchmaker Tobias Widmer disassembles, inspects, and cleans every part. Worn components are replaced, fresh lubricants applied, and the Breguet hairspring adjusted. Tobias rebuilds the calibre including the Pellaton winding system and reinstalls the watch’s seven black damping elements, which form a smart shock-proofing system between movement and case. After fine-tuning on the timing machine, the watch undergoes airtightness testing. Through this meticulous process, the Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832 is returned to life – ready for decades more on the wrist. 00:00 Watch introduction 00:45 Watch disassembling 06:58 Laser welding 08:52 Goldsmith welding 14:25 Surface finishing 28:52 Case and bracelet cleaning 29:59 Case and bracelet assembling 39:11 Movement disassembling 56:42 Movement cleaning 57:52 Movement assembling 1:25:52 Watch assembling 1:32:40 Final result
