What is this and how is it you haven’t heard of it causing a whole host of common everyday problems?! • What is it: a sphincter muscle valve that separates the small intestine and the large intestine.[1] • Its critical function is to limit the reflux of colonic contents into the ileum.[2] Approximately two liters of fluid enters the colon daily through the ileocecal valve. • The ileocecal valve is distinctive because it is the only site in the gastrointestinal tract that is used for vitamin B12 and bile acid absorption.[3][4] • when it does not function properly, the fecal reflux increases the risk of the bacterial colonization of the terminal ileum resulting in bacterial overgrowth. • The loss of control of the ileocecal antegrade flow reduces transit time and decreases absorption. • Problems with the Ileocecal valve present like this: Shoulder pain • Lightheadedness • GERD • Constipation when closed • Diarrhea when open • Nausea • Ringing in the ears • Bursitis-like pain in the shoulders and hip joints • Low back pain for no reason • Recurrent sinus infections • Dizziness • Chest pain • Heart fluttering • Headaches • Fever • The valve can at times become either "stuck shut or stuck open." When shut, the closed ileocecal valve can cause constipation and when stuck open, diarrhea will be the problem. • Causes of the Valve can come from: • Sometimes spicy or roughage-type foods will irritate the valve and cause it to stick shut or open. • Foods most likely to irritate the ICV are: coarse cereals, chips, popcorn, nuts, seeds, spicy foods, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol. • Stress • Sometimes after appendectomy problem worsens How to Close an Ileocecal Valve That Is Stuck Open When the valve is open (diarrhea, loose stools, and symptoms like those mentioned earlier), there are some temporary things that can be done first. The valve is located about halfway between the belly button and the "hip bone." Many times you can get relief in one of two ways. First, you can sometimes hold the valve shut for several minutes. This is done by placing your hand over the valve and while pushing in, pull up toward the left shoulder. The second way is to place a cold pack made of cold water or ice over the valve for about 15 to 20 minutes. This process can be repeated if necessary. (Insert video if available) • First, the toxic food products that are either backing up or that are blocked up in the intestines need to be detoxified, and the best method to do this is to use either garlic or chlorophyll. • I find that chlorophyll works the best and is easy to obtain at any health food store. Initially, either two capsules or tablets or 1/2 teaspoon of chlorophyll liquid should be taken every two hours for about six to eight hours, and the same amount with each meal for the next three or four days. • Next, the diet should be modified in such a way that spicy foods be eliminated for a week or so. • Modify your roughage-type food intake. If the problem is diarrhea, it is helpful to eliminate all roughage-type food for a short period of time. If it is a closed valve and constipation is a problem, then increase the roughage. • Eliminate alcohol, cocoa, chocolate and caffeine products from the diet. • Supplements including vitamin B12 and vitamin C support the functioning of the digestive system and bile acid absorption. • For a closed valve (constipation), add calcium and vitamin D to the diet. • For an open valve (diarrhea), add lactic acid yeast wafers to the diet, which can be obtained at any health food store. This product alone can sometimes stop even the most stubborn cases of chronic diarrhea. • In the case of an open ICV, I will often have the patient take chlorophyll tablets to help soothe and heal the bowel. • Most importantly, however, you can relieve problems almost instantly by rubbing out the following "reflex" points for both the open and the closed ileocecal valve. The areas illustrated should be massaged with firm pressure for about 10 to 20 seconds each (it is not beneficial to rub the points any longer than that. In fact, it may negate the effect). Most of the points will be extremely sore if the problem is long standing. If a cooperating friend or a vibrator is available, they can be used to work out the points. • Consider SIBO testing if this has gone on a long time, because the bacteria in the small bowel may need treatment
