A new revelation from the ongoing investigations into the deadly tour bus fire that killed all 26 passengers onboard earlier this month: the bus driver may have been drunk at the time of the crash. Toxicology tests revealed significant traces of alcohol in his blood, urine, and stomach. Officials are now considering the possibility that the driver contrived to kill himself in the crash. Su Ming-cheng continued to drive along the highway even as smoke was coming out of his bus. Moments later the vehicle crashed into the guardrail on the side of the highway and was completely engulfed in flames. The latest report released by investigators suggests that at the time of the incident, Su was drunk to the point of unconsciousness.Wang Yi-wenTaoyuan District ProsecutorToxicology tests carried out by the Justice Ministry’s Institute of Forensic Medicine on the blood, urine, and stomach contents of the driver surnamed Su revealed that his blood alcohol content was 215 milligrams per 100 cc. That is equivalent to blowing a 1.075 on a breathalyzer test.According to current regulations, driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.25 on the breathalyzer test is already enough to impair one’s attention and judgment, and can earn you a conviction for endangering public safety. The driver in the tour bus crash had a level of 1.075, meaning that he was likely delirious and had lost his sense of balance.A search of the interior of the bus also discovered five bottles of gasoline stored onboard. Pressed on whether the discovery meant that the driver had attempted to burn himself alive, investigators said that they could not rule out such a possibility at this stage.Officials are still waiting on the results of gasoline-residue tests performed on the deceased driver’s skin before making any more conjectures on the driver’s motives.
