Showcasing the Engetsu swordsmanship style without CG, the drama captures Kyoshiro's cold precision. On a rainy night, Kyoshiro encounters a samurai's son and learns of a troubled household. He intervenes to save the mother, Shizu (Hiromi Takikawa), from her husband's attack, accidentally causing the husband's death. Kyoshiro prevents Shizu from suicide and agrees to protect her. He soon finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy involving official secrets and is injured while defending Shizu. Seeking refuge in a temple, Kyoshiro discovers Shizu's past humiliation by Ieyoshi, the Shogun's heir. He learns from Senjuro Takebe, a servant of the former shogun Mizuno Echizennomori, about the corrupt influence of Sano Higo-mori (Kei Sato) on Ieyoshi. Determined to resolve the situation, Kyoshiro sets out for Kyoto to confront the true Ieyoshi.
