You've had a long journey towards the Oregon country, crossing insurmountable obstacles along the way. It is here that you ultimately see the boundary between a continent and a vast ocean and you stop to take a look around and relish in the satisfaction of the beauty in which you find yourself. Where the Columbia's final tributaries convene with each other before draining into the Pacific and thick forests of numerous species consume the spaces of land in between, a pivotally significant settlement arises to pave the way towards the development of this greater chunk of US territory. Head over to Oregon's northwestern corner and be ready for a collection of historic elements dating to the first of the United States' colonial endeavors of the Pacific Northwest. With efforts spearheaded by the namesake John Jacob Astor, a wealthy merchant from New York, this settlement was built up as a direct result of the monopolized fur trade (There's a reason Oregon is known as the Beaver State.) From there, Astoria eventually grew its fishing sector and became a nationwide source of canned seafood products. The luster of this port city's opportunity attracted many immigrants, of both domestic and international stock, reflecting a parallel wave of pioneerdom witnessed from its original settlers. From its role as the end of Lewis and Clark's expedition west, to one of many popular finish points for Oregon Trail sojourners, to our own destination of choice on this Best of the Most West tour, Astoria seems to have often been a critical epicenter for the spirit of the American voyage. Let's keep it that way and not forget the contributions this tiny dot on the US map has given to Oregon's and the west coast's history and culture.
