• willie-whistleblower The evocative Spiritual', n° 10 of '24 Melodies', Opus 59, no 10, played here in a fine arrangement, on two C flutes (Solange and Lucie) with alto flute. The time indication is "Lento,...Molto Cantabile". Make allowances for tuning--the alto is an old lady--born 1915. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in 1875 of mixed English and Sierra Leonean parents: his father Dr Daniel Taylor was a Creole from Sierra Leone. Taught by Stanford at the Royal College of Music he was helped by Elgar whose publisher had described the young composer as 'a genius'. His works gained a following in the United States and, in 1904 President Roosevelt received him at the White House as a pioneer black composer. Sadly, he sold the rights of his most popular creation 'Hiawatha's Wedding Feast' for just 15 Guineas and he died in relative poverty from pneumonia, aged 37. His friend, the poet Alfred Noyes wrote of him: 'Too young to die his great simplicity his happy courage in an alien world his gentleness made all that knew him love him'
