If you enjoy this video please consider subscribing    / @walktheworldaway   You can also see this village from the air    • Burnsall From The Air | A Beautiful E...   Burnsall is a peaceful and attractive small village in the Upper Wharfedale valley of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in England. The five-arched Burnsall Bridge which stretches across the River Wharfe has been in existence since at least the 14th century and was repaired in both 1609 and 1659 at the expense of William Craven who also founded The Old Grammar School in the village. St Wilfrid's Church is almost entirely perpendicular and contains an 11th-century font carved with bird and beasts, and a Jacobean pulpit. In the vestry there is a 14th-century alabaster panel depicting the Nativity. Various fragments of pre-Norman Conquest crosses and hogbacks have been collected from the local area and are on display in the building. Hogbacks take the form of recumbent monuments, generally with a curved ('hogbacked') ridge, often also with outwardly curved sides. This shape, and the fact that they are frequently decorated with 'shingles' on either side of the central ridge, show that they are stylised 'houses' for the dead. The 'house' is of a Scandinavian longhouse type associated with the 'mead hall' feasting at Valhalla in pre-Christian Norse religion. One theory is that hogbacks originated among the Danish settlers who emigrated to northern England in the 870s.
