Liverpool and Juventus were draw together in 2005, for the first time since the tragic incident at the Heysel stadium in 1985. In the first leg Liverpool won 2-1. Capello and his Juventus team were confident going into the game, but faced an 11 man Liverpool defence who offered up few chances for the Italians. In the build up to both games the clubs tried to reconcile their differences, but some Italians refused to forgive the incidents of 20 years before. The Italian police has to use tear gas before the game after some of the Juventus fans turned to violence outside the ground as the away fans arrived by bus. Inside the ground the hardcore fans in the Curva Sud displayed banners and sang songs against the Liverpool players and fans. In the Curva Nord, adjacent to the Liverpool fans, things were more violent. Fans threw flares, seats and missiles into the Liverpool section.
