Established in 1932, it is the first airport in the state of Kerala and the fifth international airport of India, officially declared in 1991. The airport, spread over an area of 800 acres, the airport is approximately 3.7 km (2.3 mi) due west from the city centre and the Padmanabhaswamy Temple,16 km (9.9 mi) from Kovalam beach, 13 km (8.1 mi) from Technopark and 21 km (13 mi) from Vizhinjam International Seaport. It shares a visible proximity to Shankumugham Beach making it the nearest airport to a water body in India as it is just about 0.6 miles (approx. 1 km) away from the Arabian Sea. It is also the southern most international/domestic airport in the Indian subcontinent. Terminal 1 at Trivandrum International Airport is the domestic terminal for all airlines except for Air India, which uses Terminal 2 for its domestic flights. It has 18 check-in counters and 3 security kiosks, and is equipped with various facilities including the Adani Lounge, restaurants, and basic amenities like Wi-Fi. Terminal 2 Terminal 2 was opened on 1 May 1986, at a cost of ₹95 crores and was used for international flights until July 2010 when operations shifted to Terminal 3. After this, the terminal remained operational for only three months per year. In 2017, after revamping Terminal 2 at a cost of ₹100 crores, DIAL shifted all operations of GoAir and select operations of IndiGo to that terminal in order to continue expansion work of Terminal 1.As of July 2025, Terminal 2 is currently closed due to ongoing renovations Terminal 3 Domestic full-service airline Air India operates from Terminal 3.
