Thank you to Michelle Cockram for sharing a conversation on the importance of MSK Physios' receiving pelvic floor education. Michelle covered the following: The shortage of Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapists and therefore the need for more Health Professionals to upskill so they can sign post, give basic advice and educate people with pelvic floor dysfunction · There is a lot that can help that does not include an internal examination · Kinetic chain is key, not just pelvic floor muscle in isolation · NHS 10 year plan and how all post-natal women should be offered Pelvic Health Physiotherapy from 2023 like in France · MSK Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Movement Coaches, Sport Clinicians, are in the prime position to be able identify people living with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD), and offer advice or sign post. · NHS has long waiting lists; PFD, it is debilitating. Many people give up physical activity, socialising and adjust lifestyle choices due to symptoms. · Giving Physiotherapists the confidence to know how they can help patients with PFD is a NO BRAINER, this should not be a taboo subject, as 85% of people with mild stress incontinence improve after 3-6 sessions of physiotherapy · Post-natal is forever · Menopause is often the start of MSK dysfunction and PFD so it is important MSK Physiotherapy staff are educated in the pelvic floor to achieve the best outcome for the patient · Patients can present with a knee or shoulder problem from their referral and actually have poor core and pelvic floor muscle strength which is an important factor that needs for their recovery. Research shows the common link between LxSp dysfunction and Pelvic Floor dysfunction.
