(27 Feb 2021) Former members of the now-dissolved group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on Saturday assembled a small market as a part of efforts to reintroduce their members into Colombian society after the 2016 peace accords. The agreement between the rebel group and the Colombian government left former combatants without any clear economic activity when they laid down their weapons, and also facing the resistance of many to their inclusion in society. After five decades of war, which killed 250,000 people, Latin America's longest-running conflict remains a source of contention in the nation. Elsa Meneses, a former FARC member now among the traders, said those benefiting from the small markets are families of former combatants and populations in territories where the rebel group retreated. Surveys by Colombia's government indicate most of the nearly 13,200 ex-combatants are firmly on the path toward reintegration. Still, small groups have decided to abandon the peace project and retake the armed path, helped by those who have not fully reintegrated.
