http://www.thewatchbox.com Jaeger-LeCoultre forged its motorsports legacy long before the “Cosmograph” became the “Daytona” and F1 “brand ambassadors” became fixtures in watchmaker ad copy. Through its Jaeger instrument division, JLC (then LeCoultre) outfitted many of the original 1920′s “sports” cars – so named because they could be driven to the track and used for motorsports. The line between Aston Martin road and race cars didn’t exist, and both applications featured Jaeger dashboard instruments. This relationship endured through intervening decades into the 21st century, when, for the first time, an Aston Martin logo appeared on a JLC rather than the other way around. The 2007 Amvox II DBS chronograph tackled the challenge of “gloved and greasy” chronograph operation; JLC’s solution was radically different and unique in watchmaking history. Jaeger eliminated chronograph pushers entirely. Reasoning that the bigger the target, the better, JLC created an articulated case that pivots on ball bearings. Push the crystal at 12 o’clock, and the chronograph starts; repeat the motion to stop the timer; a tap at 6 o’clock resets the mechanism. Even better, JLC guards against accidental inputs by equipping the DBS with a sliding lever at 9 o’clock that locks the chronograph, locks the reset, or enables both controls. The Amvox II in titanium stunned industry insiders when unveiled in 2006, but the PVD-coated variant raised collector enthusiasm to a fever pitch. Only 500 units were built, and they sold out almost instantly. The Amvox II in PVD elevates the "concept watch" aesthetic of the Ti model to a level that packs the visual punch of a Richard Mille, MB&F, or Urwerk hyper-exotic. In short, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Amvox II is scarce, innovative, historic, unique, and highly collectible. It hails from one of the top masons in Swiss watchmaking, and its Aston Martin links boast an 80-year patina of legitimacy that rival auto-branded watches cannot hope to match. In short, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Amovx II PVD is the total package for haute horlogerie aficionados with equal measures of avant-garde sensibility and reverence for history.
