The Keys To Growing The Best Melons

I have a huge watermelon patch but not too much fruit to show for it. Why is that? We're about four miles from the coast here, and we struggle to grow melons really well here. There aren't too many, and what we do have are small. Watermelons, in particular, are a desert crop and LOVE the heat. If you live in a coastal area, it might just be more difficult to grow certain crops really well. Along with watermelons, you might also notice this with okra, beefsteak tomatoes, and more. Just know that it's not your fault! Now compare this "production" to what we had at our Ramona seed production farm. It's much further inland, and it's almost always over 80 during the summer and over 100 many days. Even though that's still within San Diego County and about 45 minutes away, we were able to grow hundreds of melons! So what should you know about melons? Melons need A LOT of space. They're probably going to sprawl over a large area, so you can lay out the vines in a way that makes sense for your area. Don't let your plants get overcrowded. They're also heavy feeders, so give them lots of nutrients in an area with good soil. While they like the heat, they also need lots of water. Finally, experiment with varieties and find the types that work best for you. Different melons give you different signals about when they're ready to be harvested. I always like to know when the plant was started, so you can reference the seed pack for the timeline. As it ripens, look at the size and color, and you can check the tendril just before the melon. Once that's all dried up, no more energy is going to the melon, and it'll be ready.
