Dementia is most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a multifactorial progression of neurodegeneration in which the accumulation of amyloid-beta and tau proteins in the brain and chronic and dysregulated inflammatory processes lead to significant cognitive impairment. Though novel diagnostic methods and approved and emerging disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) are exciting new options that combat the traditional diagnostic nihilism about AD in the medical community, clinicians often lack the skillsets required to recognize the early symptoms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) that precede AD and intervene swiftly with novel approaches in the necessary timeframe. It is crucial that clinicians in collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team are knowledgeable about these exciting new and emerging diagnostic tools and treatments that will enable them to seize a critical treatment window in the diagnosis and care of patients with MCI and early dementia due to AD. In the first activity of this three-part CME Outfitters Snack series, expert faculty will demonstrate a multifaceted approach to the timely diagnosis of MCI. Learners will be guided through timely screening for risk factors, early symptom recognition, and current and emerging diagnostic tools.
