Tip 1. Decide you definitely want a parterre, it is a long term commitment, consider all the pros and cons. You can’t transplant it to a new home, it is permanent, it takes time and effort. On the other hand it is a labour of love, a pleasure, impressive and meditative. Tip 2. Clear, measure and draw the space to scale and divide the plan into 30cm squares. Tip 3. Personal Context, examine YOUR own situation, what you need from your space and any fact which will inform and effect your design, such as views from window, slopes, topography, climate. Tip 4. Choose your plant, consider alternatives to Boxwood, such as rosemary, lavender, ilex, holly, yew. Tip 5. Research and study images of formal parterres online to develop ideas for your design scheme. Let Google be your friend. Tip 6. Play around with lots of different ideas, don’t limit yourself to your original thoughts. Be imaginative and be prepared to change your mind. Tip 7. Be aware of the spacing and don’t overcrowd your plants, at least 9 inches apart. They need this for vigor and vitality as they get established. Tip 8. Purchase smaller plants rather than larger ones. It is tempting to go for the immediate effect, but smaller ones will settle in better and catch up. Tip 9. Use the plan you have drawn as a guide to counting. Buy a few extras as spares. Consider buying bare root plants in the winter or none-growing season. Tip 10. Stake out your design before committing, take a step back and look at it from all angles and heights, sleep on it, don’t rush to a design. #gardendesign #gardens #gardening #marksgardenuk email: [email protected]
