How to say How are you in Arabic Let’s start with the most popular way to ask, how are you? When asking a male how are you, we say Kif ḥaalak (m) كيف حالَك We have different ways to answer this question, you can choose to learn whatever you like most and use it. So Kif ḥaalak? the answer could be: mneeḥ (fine, or good) منيح ilḥamdilla (praise be to God) الحمد الله or nushkor Alla (thank God) نشكر الله mabsout (happy) مبسوط tamam (perfect) تمام mashil-ḥal (so and so)… ماشي الحال when asking a female kif ḥaalek (f) the answer could be similar to the masculine with little changes: mneeḥa (fine, or good) منيحة ilḥamdilla (praise be to God) الحمد الله or nushkor Alla (thank God) نشكر الله mabsouta (happy) مبسوطة tamam (perfect) تمام mashil-ḥal (so and so)… ماشي الحال Kif haalkum or ḥaalku? the answer could be: mnaaḥ مناح ilḥamdilla (praise be to God) الحمد الله or nushkor Alla (thanks be to God) نشكر الله mabsouteen (happy) مبسوطين tamam (perfect) تمام mashil-ḥal (so and so)… ماشي الحال By the way you can also use a combination of these answers. For example, nushkor Alla mneeḥ ilḥamdilla tamam mashil-ḥal It’s important to note (as you probably noticed) the words slightly change, depending whom you’re asking, whether a male, a female or plural. Kif ḥalak, Kif ḥalek, Kif ḥalkum, Kif ḥalku. Also, the answers: mabsout, mabsouta, mabsouteen. mneeḥ, mneeḥa, mnaaḥ When asking friends how are you? you can shorten Kif ḥalak into kifak كيفَك and Kif ḥalek into kifek كيفِك Kif ḥalkum (halku) into kifkum or kifku. كيفكُم، كيفكو You can use any of the answers from before. To make the conversation longer, especially with friends; you carry on asking shul-aḫbar شو الأخبار(what’s up; what’s the news) you can even personalize it shu aḫbarak (m.) شو أخبارَك shu aḫbarek (f.) شو أخبارِك shu aḫbarkum or aḫbarku (pl.) شو أخباركُم، شو أخباركو ḫaalsa or fish ishi jdeed (there is nothing new) خالصة، فش اشي جديد kulu tamam (everything is fine) كلو تمام if you’re answer is, I’m not good ana mish mneeḥ (m.) أنا مش منيح ana mish mneeḥa (f.) أنا مش منيحة iḥna mish mnaaḥ (pl.) إحنا مش مناح you could say this But Arabs usually don’t say this directly. You would get it from the body language or the voice tone of the person. After asking how are you and what’s up, let me also give you an extra tip, that will make you sound more familiar with Arabic language and culture. Which is asking about their health. It might sound strange for the western culture, but we do ask about it. When asking a male (how is your health, how do you feel) kif ṣiḥtak كيف صحتَك For a female kif ṣiḥtek كيف صحتِك For two or more kif ṣiḥitkum (how is your health, how do you feel) صحتكُم You can choose any of the answers we’ve mentioned. If someone asks you kif halak out of politeness and care you ask him… her… or them back, and what about you? W inte? (you male) وإنت w inti? (you female) وإنتِ w intu? (you plural) وإنتو Hope this lesson was useful for you. Please feel free to write any questions, suggestions and comments below, to help me make more effective videos.
