Double packing the food barrel and dry bag, our pathway became extremely rugged as we picked our way down the side of a canyon. I was carrying the food barrel with the shoulder straps on and my large drybag sideways on top of the barrel. My axe and tripod were strapped to the outside of the drybag. Nearing the end of the carry, I wanted to take a break, so leaned on a rock ledge with my left hand before pushing the large drybag off of the top of the food barrel onto the ledge. The axe sheath had fallen off on the portage and somehow the axe had turned 90 degrees to the bag. In addition to that, it was just my luck that the sharp blade of the axe also came crashing down right on the back of my left hand with all the weight of the bag behind it. I knew immediately it was bad. Luckily, I was able to stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the cut with my right hand and leaning on it with my weight. Ted came running over with the first-aid kit and when I took my right hand off the wound to have a look, we both knew the trip was over. The skin around the cut was loose and it was gaping. You could see cuts in all three of my extensor tendons and more. The photo of the cut you see here was taken by the Dr. in Wawa after we got out. It had sealed and the Dr. reopened it to assess the tendon damage, it looked much worse in the bush. Ted dumped iodine in the cut and then dried I dried it with a sterile gauze pad. I then wiped the area with an alcohol wipe and closed the wound with butterfly sutures before bandaging it up. With the wound dealt with, I fended off shock as we came up with a plan to cache our stuff in the bush and trek out with essentials. Ted packed bags and before too long we were on our way. We'd thought it would take two days to trek out. However, because of some miscommunication with our sat. texting device, our shuttle driver left Wawa with plans to meet us at our desired pick-up location the same day. He was out of reception and we had no way to contact him. This meant that he'd be waiting a very long time and would have to come back again the following day if we didn't make it there before dark. The additional shuttle would cost us an extra 200$. So, we pushed hard to make it there but thought it wasn't going to happen as it grew later in the evening. Just as we were accepting that we'd be camping in the bush, I stumbled on a trail that provided a clear route to a mining road. We were saved! We still had a ways to go once on the road but it was way faster than bushwhacking, although ultimately a further distance. Amazingly our shuttle driver was still there, (he'd been waiting for four hours) and we got out of the bush. I went and got my injury looked at at the hospital in Wawa that night. It's going to take a while to heal but hopefully, I'll regain mobility. Now, we gotta go back and get our stuff out of the bush....To be continued.
