Justin J. Murphy-Mancini performs Resonet in laudibus by Fridolin Sicher. Sicher sets this popular Christmas carol in the tenor voice, with complex, ornamental passagework in the right hand. This piece is an excellent example of the florid organ style that emerged during the 15th century and set the stage for the first masters of idiomatic keyboard composition at the end of the 16th century. The video shows the original manuscript of this piece, written in Old German Organ Tablature. The top voice is written in largely recognizable mensural notation, with the lower voices written in a short hand using letters and slash marks. The piece begins on the third system from the bottom. A symbol on the second page indicates that the performer should return and play the final section again after reaching the bottom of the page. Fridolin Sicher (1490–1546) was a Swiss organist and composer. He studied with Hans Buchner in Konstanz, learning the highly ornamented practice of arranging vocal music for keyboard (called intabulation). He is remembered for copying out a large collection of intabulations containing works by many important Renaissance composers. Recorded at Christ Episcopal Church, Tacoma, WA Organ: John Brombaugh & Assoc., Op. 22, 1979.
