Hickory Hardwood: Uses, Characteristics, and Identification Guide

At Baird Brothers, we know there are a lot of wood species you can choose from for your project. But how do you know which one to pick? In this video, Christy Miller from Oak Hill Millworks chats with Terry Baird on the characteristics of hickory wood. Watch as Terry Baird explains the projects that hickory lumber is typically used for, either chosen for look or durability. Learn facts about hickory trees, workability, and how it ranks on the Janka hardness scale. Terry discusses the different colors of hickory sapwood and heartwood. If you want a natural, rustic wooden look, hickory is hard to beat. Staining options are available to achieve different looks, including medium brown and reddish-brown tints. Hickory trees are in the genus Carya. There are many species of hickory, including pecan hickory (Carya illinoinensis), shellbark hickory (Carya laciniosa), shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), pignut hickory (Carya glabra), mockernut hickory (Carya tomentosa), and bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis). Hickory is known for its durability, making it a prime choice for hardwood flooring. However, there are many uses for sturdy hickory wood. True hickory can be used for tool handles, ladder rungs, and sporting goods. Thanks to its incredible shock resistance, it is often used to make baseball bats and golf club shafts. While it is good for many uses, its strength often makes it hard for everyday woodworking. Baird Brothers can do the hard work for you. Hickory trees grow all over the world but North America has the most diverse population. They are commonly found in the eastern United States.
