📷 VIRTUAL WALK — Experience the sights and sounds of Sheffield and surrounding areas. 🎥 Filmed 23 March 2022 💬 Includes CC Subtitles This is the first in a series of photo walks around my local area. Woodhouse Village — Chapel Street and Cross Street. POINTS OF INTEREST Cross Daggers, Stocks, War Memorial HISTORY The Cross Daggers is a Grade II listed former public house in Woodhouse, Sheffield, England. The building features a date stone above the door which states that it was built in 1658 as well as the initials TGN, which is said to have stood for Thomas Godfrey Newbould, a prominent Quaker and landlord. The building overlooks the village stocks as well as the cross. The cross was erected in 1775 and the sundial and weather vane was added in 1826. Following the Reformation, Woodhouse became in the early 1600s a stronghold of non-conformity with the growth of the Quaker movement. Woodhouse grew quickly into a mining community with the opening of a number of mines within commuting distance. The village expanded considerably to accommodate the pit workers. Spa Lane, Back Lane and Sheffield Road quickly wound a new and expansive network of pit houses, ensuring that Woodhouse would become a 'pit village'. Since the decimation of the coal mining industry in the 1980s by the Tory Government, Woodhouse has slowly declined and is now a struggling suburb and housing estate in the south-east of Sheffield.
