GOATHLAND | A tour of beautiful Goathland, Whitby North Yorkshire (Heartbeat TV Filming Location). Welcome to the village of Goathland near Whitby, otherwise known as Aidensfield in Heartbeat and Hogsmeade / Hogwarts Station in Harry Potter! Goathland is a village and civil parish nestled within the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it sits a few miles north of Pickering, off the A169 road leading to Whitby. The village boasts a rich history, potentially dating back to the Viking period, with records indicating its existence shortly after the Norman Conquest. In 1109, King Henry I granted the land to Osmund the Priest for a hermitage, then known as Godelandia, in memory of his mother, Queen Matilda. The name "Goathland" is believed to originate from either "good land" or "Goda's land," with Goda being an Old English personal name. Historically, much of the surrounding land belonged to the Duchy of Lancaster, and a unique tradition persists where the Duchy's tenants have the right to graze their sheep on the village green and the surrounding moorland. In the 19th century, Goathland briefly gained popularity as a spa town, attracting visitors to its healthy waters. Goathland has served as a captivating backdrop for several well-known films and television series. Perhaps most famously, it doubled as the fictional village of Aidensfield in the long-running and beloved ITV drama "Heartbeat," which aired from 1992 to 2010. Many recognizable locations from the series can still be seen in the village, including the Goathland Hotel, which served as the Aidensfield Arms pub, Scripps Garage (now a gift shop), and Aidensfield Stores. Adding to its cinematic fame, Goathland's railway station played the role of Hogsmeade Station in the first "Harry Potter" film, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." The station, part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a heritage steam railway line, attracts numerous visitors who come to see the iconic location. The railway itself, running between Pickering and Whitby, is a significant attraction, offering scenic journeys through the stunning moorland landscape. Beyond its screen appearances, Goathland offers natural beauty with the Mallyan Spout waterfall, a striking 70-foot cascade located a short walk from the village center. The village and its surrounding area are also popular with walkers, offering various trails through the moors and along the riverbanks. The Grade II listed St Mary's Church, dating back to the late 19th century but with a history of religious buildings on the site since at least the 16th century, is another point of interest.
