I talk about the old-fashioned teaching, which was much more prevalent in previous generations, for children to finish everything on their plate. I talk about how in some cases parents can even force kids to finish their food, or punish them if they don't, but that often the encouragement is milder. I also talk about how some parents do not allow kids to control their portion size, spooning things out onto the plate for the kids instead of letting the kids choose the portion and choose to stop eating. I explain how this sort of practice can condition kids to ignore or override their body's signals that they are full and that it would be good to stop eating. I explain that health problems like obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are often caused by overeating in ways that ignore or override the body's natural signals. I conclude by explaining that it is good to encourage kids not to waste food, but that you can do this by setting a good example yourself, by initially taking a small amount, and then later returning for a second or third helping.
