Franklin Merrell-Wolff was my first spiritual teacher. Although not well known to the general public, he was known to many of the most influential teachers and gurus of the 20th century. Just before we saw him, he had been visited by John C. Lilly and Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche, and he was then working his way through The Laws of Form, by fellow mathematician G. Spencer Brown... Needless to say, our interaction was direct and profound. We had originally connected under rather essential and somewhat extraordinary circumstances. The last time we met was in May of 1980, and I wished to see what had become of his property, now the Great Space Center, since his passing in 1985. The work of the Center is being carried on and maintained by his descendants. One of the things I wished to do with this visit was to make the trek to his ashrama. Franklin Merrell-Wolff's Ashrama is located on the saddle between two mountains in the High Sierras, overlooked by Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States. It's a somewhat hard climb to get to it. The video was shot on December 14, 2017, so temperatures were near freezing upon arrival in early afternoon, as attested to by the ice on the mountain stream below the ashram. Once leased from the US Forestry Service, which lease is now expired, the building is doorless and left open to the elements. Wandering travellers, not knowing of its origins, have not always respected the sanctity of the space. When I got there, one of the walls had graffiti on it, as well as being filled with broken branches, charred wood and accumulated dirt. I could not bear to leave it in such a state, so with a small hand broom and a scrap of loose roofing shingle, I immediately began to clean up and clear all the debris, soot and dirt from the place for the next two hours or so. The video shows the ashrama's condition after the clean-up - as well as part of my story... His major works, Pathways Through To Space, and Philosophy of Consciousness Without an Object are now available in one volume entitled Franklin Merrell-Wolff's Experieince and Philosophy. It should be on every bookshelf. It is hoped that Merrell-Wolff's profound non-dualistic teaching legacy continues to reach those who are seeking the deepest essence of existence. Om Tat Sat. Many thanks to Doroethy Leonard for setting up the visit to the Great Space Center and deepest gratitude to James and Jessica for hosting me.
