This video is from the Aug. 11, 1971 Major League Baseball game between the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, won by the Athletics, 5-3. The game, joined just before the ninth inning and running through the decisive 10th, was broadcast on WHDH TV in Boston, with Ken Coleman and Ned Martin on the play by play and Johnny Pesky offering analysis. Young A's lefthanded fireballer Vida Blue burst onto the MLB scene in 1971, going 24-8 and winning the American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards. In this game he is matched against Red Sox ace Sonny Siebert. This is not to be confused with the famous May 28, 1971 game at Fenway when Siebert (8-0 going in) bested Blue (10-1 before taking the mound) in what the Boston Globe's Bob Ryan years later called “merely one of the most electrifying regular season spectacles in the last 50 years of Red Sox baseball.” But this one, with the same great matchup of starters, still had lots of drama. This time Siebert, who allowed two runs in the first and one in the third, exited after eight innings, trailing by a 3-0 score. But in the Sox' half of the inning, Blue, bidding for his 20th complete game, gave up a two-run homer to Doug Griffin, and an even more dramatic one-out solo shot over the Monster by Rico Petrocelli in the ninth. Alas, a Reggie Jackson RBI double and a run-scoring wild pitch put Oakland ahead, 5-3, in the top of the 10th, and despite putting the first two runners on in their half, the Sox couldn't pull it out, tough lefthander Darold Knowles getting Carl Yastrzemski swinging after an epic at-bat to end the game. Although they lost this one, always great to watch Sox stalwarts Yaz, Rico, George Scott, Reggie Smith, and Siebert, etc., in action! I mainly posted this because it wouldn't fit on my DVD of various 1970 Red Sox games (also on this playlist) so I recorded/posted it seperately. But it highlights the '71 Vida Blue phenomenon (he got a standing O from Sox fans upon leaving the game), which I haven't seen much live action from, and those A's uniforms sure are purty! I posted it for historical and educational purposes, and for those who will enjoy it as much as I did.
