“Moonlight” Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia, Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, Op. 27. No. 2, 1st Movement, Adagio sostenuto 4:49 Beethoven never approved use of the "Moonlight" title. For Czerny, Beethoven’s student, who heard Beethoven play often this “Sonata as Sort of a Fantasy” , the Adagio (1st movement) reflects a “nocturnal scene with a mournful ghostly voice that sounds from afar”. Pianists Edwin Fischer and Seymour Bernstein found a letter signed by Beethoven in a Vienna museum showing that the Moonlight’s Adagio Sostenuto was inspired by Mozart’s tragic opera-- in which the ghost of the murder victim drags Don Giovanni down to Hell. Beethoven opens his Quasi Fantasia with his famous three notes, repeats the triplet phrase throughout and gives us a haunting syncopated voice calling out above. Seymour Bernstein says: “ I don’t know anything in music that projects tragedy and sadness to the extent this piece does.” https://www.tonebase.co/piano/courses.... Thus, Beethoven’s Inspiration for the “Moonlight” was the Final Death Scene in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. I perform the “Moonlight” to convey the sorrow and suffering unto death that I hear in this universally beloved piece. I hope you enjoy my interpretation, which includes a funereal death roll passing over to the left hand in the final measures. I reject trying to paint a pretty picture of moonlight over some beautiful Swiss lake etc. as just not true to Beethoven’s intent. Yet the name ”Moonlight” has stuck to this piece with great success for centuries. Why? Because the beauty of the music overwhelms, evoking all sorts of emotions, whatever you name it.
