Scored for string ensemble, solo trumpet, and a quartet of flutes, the piece unfolds as a philosophical drama: the strings sustain a serene, motionless backdrop—the “Silence of the Druids”—while the trumpet poses “The Perennial Question of Existence,” always the same line. In contrast, the flutes—“The Fighting Answerers”—respond with increasing urgency, only to falter and fade. What remains is the question, unanswered, and the quiet presence of the eternal.
