Johann Sebastian Bach was in de winter van 1705-1706 400 kilometer te voet naar Lübeck gegaan om Buxtehude te zien en horen dirigeren en orgelspelen. Het verblijf in Lübeck betekende zo veel voor Bach dat hij zijn "leervakantie" eigenmachtig verlengde en daarmee zijn baan als organist op het spel zette. Zowel J.S. Bach als (eerder) Johann Mattheson en Händel kregen de kans om Buxtehude op te volgen. Het is een anekdote dat zij afgeschrikt werden door het vooruitzicht daarvoor Buxtehudes oudste dochter te moeten huwen. ENGLISH Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) is a representative of the North German Baroque. His compositions influenced Johann Sebastian Bach, who had visited him and studied his works. It is this quality of Buxtehude's music that brought him fame. Johann Sebastian Bach had walked 400 kilometers to Lübeck in the winter of 1705-1706 to see and hear Buxtehude conducting and playing the organ. The stay in Lübeck meant so much to Bach that he arbitrarily extended his "learning holiday" and thereby jeopardized his job as an organist. Both J.S. Bach (earlier) and Johann Mattheson and Handel were given the opportunity to succeed Buxtehude. ORGAN HISTORY The organ at Leens was built in 1733-4 by Albertus Anthoni Hinsz. Hinsz undertook the work at Leens for f 3.400,–. The instrument was built with 27 stops, divided among Hoofdwerk, Rugwerk and independent Pedal. The case design and details were borrowed from the organ of the Michaëlskerk (St. Michael’s Church) at Zwolle. This design was repeated a number of times by Hinsz: in Almelo, Midwolda, Harlingen, Bolsward and Uithuizermeeden. Of all these instruments, that at Leens is the most brilliant and the closest in sound to the Schnitger tradition. The carvings and statues of the richly decorated case were made by Theodorus van der Haven and Caspar Struiwig. The organ was renovated in 1843-1844 by Geert Pieters Dik, 1867 repair by Petrus van Oeckelen (after the building of a new tower for the church), and in 1922 restored by Jan Doornbos. On each of these occasions, one or more stops were replaced. The organ, which had been cased up during the restoration of the church in 1948-52, had endured so much that a complete restoration was required. 1963-7 Van Vulpen of Utrecht restored the organ and reïnstated the original disposition In 1981 there was an addition with a couple of the Pedal to Hoofdwerk. In 2010, the (probably) applied in 1844 proportionally floating tuning was changed to a Neidhardt II temperature. 2020, the Dutch organ maker REIL gave the organ major maintenance (in fact a restoration). The carvings and statues in the facade have been restored. The intonation has been checked and corrected where necessary. The bellows of the organ have been reconstructed.
