And there is no better place to start than the ignition timing. This is the first thing that really needs to be done anyway to start the engine. And as I've stated many times before, I stand on the shoulders of others who came before me. Setting the ignition timing is not hard at all. Greg Bender provides excellent instructions on his website. Here is a link to the specific page: https://www.thisoldtractor.com/moto_g... Instructions are also available in the Chilton manual and the Shade tree Mechanic Book. I used the Chilton manual to create my own test light and the sequence provided in the Chilton manual is the same as in Greg Bender's website. Greg Bender's website, though is much clearer in its steps! Chilton Manual https://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_man... Shade tree Mechanic Book https://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_man... Once the timing is set, we can work on getting the motorcycle started for the first time. THESE ARE NOT INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS! I AM A NOVICE WORKING ON MOTORCYCLES IN MY GARAGE AS A HOBBY! With that being said, all I do is predicated on making the motorcycle incredibly safe, incredibly reliable, and preserved in a state that can be maintainable for decades. I'll seal the tank, to preserve the tank, paint and clear metal parts after de-rusting them as much as possible, nickel plate parts that would be susceptible to rusting if their finish has been removed or rusted away, use new seals and gaskets when needed, grease and oil all component that need to be greased and oiled, and change any components that may be jenky. I want to make the motorcycle shine as a work of art as it is, but not necessarily make it a Concours level bike. When I push the start button, I want it to start. I want the engine to run like a Swiss clock for hours at a time, with a comfortable seat on the bike, and will enough character that the motorcycle will turn heads. That is where I am at. Here is my 1973 (Model Year 1973) Moto Guzzi Eldorado Motorcycle. It is a number matching motorcycle that has is an absolute basket case. Let's break it down and rebuild it! Please remember - I am a novice at this, so please don't use these videos as anything more than entertainment. Not everything is recorded (although I do try to record most things) and you will see me referencing manuals and websites for information. Many times, the information is conflicting. I rely heavily on Chilton's manual for this bike. You should rely on such a manual as well. Many times, I go back to inspect and re-inspect. Here are my go to resources.
