Case Study: An Upside-Down House Emerges from the Pennsylvania Forest

A long-abandoned 19th-century railroad bed was the perfect site for this contemporary “Forest Retreat” near the Endless Mountains in Harveys Lake, Pennsylvania. Designed by Gabe Hodge, principal architect and founder at Materia Prima Studio, the house flips the traditional floorplan. Hodge’s design places the main living areas and kitchen on the upper level, maximizing light and forest views throughout the day. The bedrooms are on the lower level. The effect is a house growing out of the hill and peeking through the trees. Hodge used materials connected to the landscape when building the home: local bluestone as the base, cedar siding with detailing that mimics the feathering of the area’s red-winged blackbirds, and a planted roof that gives an uninterrupted green view into the trees around the home. This natural focus extended to the windows, too. Custom Marvin Ultimate windows gave the design team the ability to have huge expanses of glass – perfect for letting in lots of natural daylight – and trim the windows in Douglas Fir. “With something like this home, we’re looking for a particular type of wood finish on the inside,” said Kenny Shino, builder and owner at Dakan Enterprises Inc. “Marvin offered several different species of wood.
