What if students discovered that science is as creative a field as art? This talk explores the overlooked role of mycology in K–12 education and the powerful impact of bringing fungi and other often-ignored organisms into learning spaces. We’ll examine why fungi remain underrepresented in biology curricula and how that gap shapes public perceptions and even government funding for research. We will also look at how hands-on, creative learning can shift this narrative by grounding students in their local ecosystems. I’ll introduce the field of bioart: what it is, why it matters, and how it can transform science education by fostering authentic experimentation, interdisciplinary thinking, and genuine student ownership. I will share practical strategies for integrating bioart and mycology, whether formally in the classroom or informally at home. Discover how bioart can cultivate curiosity, deepen scientific understanding, and help reshape the future of science education.
