Buying Glasses in South East Asia - The Problems and the Pitfalls.

After visiting opticians for 6 months we finally decided to purchase glasses in Danang Vietnam at Quang Optics. We have visited many Opticians but either we didn't understand the cost levels or we didn't have enough time. Either way we left it until we had 15 days in Danang. When we purchased glasses in the USA it is a pretty simple but expensive process. We needed prescription glasses and sunglasses and varifocals so that is where we got stuck. In the USA it is a simple process with one price dependent on the frames. In South East Asia they gave us 5 different prices for the varifocal and 3 different prices for the type of lens. And that is before we chose the frame. We assumed the comparison to the USA would be the top one, but we should have been comparing prices with the lowest level as that would be the nearer comparison. We tried in KL but prices came out double the USA and in Thailand we were referred to Owndays but again it was a lot more expensive than the USA. We even tried the UK but we needed 14 days and we only had 13. We finally found Quang Optic and purchased varifocal (or as they call them Multifocal) for a total of $718.47 US for 4 pairs (2 glasses and 2 sunglasses) with one of the frames being designer. This was the best price we found across South East Asia and the service was top notch. They had some excellent testing equipment and even measured the glasses position on the head to ensure the multifocal was in the right position, a first for us. So a big thumbs up for Quang Optics.
