On a September night in 1974, Stephen King checked into Room 217 of Colorado's Stanley Hotel and had a nightmare so terrifying about his son being chased through the halls that he woke at 3 AM and conceived The Shining in a single night. What King didn't know was that the 4th floor was already famous for ghost children playing in the halls, a spectral piano that plays itself in the empty concert hall, and the spirit of housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson who still makes the beds in Room 217. The ghosts didn't just haunt Stephen King—they gave him his most famous story. Note: We Use Public Domain Photos.
